Sooooo close….

July 30, 2015

It appears Susan is getting her groove back. Which is also a great excuse to bring out this classic…

I am so very close to a personal victory at Aspire Health and Performance. All that sweating is paying off along with some adjustments to what I am eating,  I can sense that one of my first victories is coming up fast. Andrew and I have also done some lifting and I am not nearly as far off my former strength as I had feared!

As you work on one part of your life, in a heathy and intentful way (is intentful a real word? Well it is now) it’s amazing how other parts of your life start to fall in line. It becomes easier to create the change you need, because you are learning that you can create change and it isn’t as scary as you may have imagined.

Step by step it is happening. My confidence on air is returning, I am making sure I get enough sleep, I am entering triathlons, and planning 10 hour fundraising wake surf’s from one end of the lake to another.

I am also taking stock of what I want, and how it is going to happen.

I am not a woman that wears a bunch of makeup. When I do it is usually a big event or a photo shoot. When I am not feeling great about my skin I also try to even things out ~ this usually happens in the winter.  Over the years I have learned that if I want to look healthy in the colder months I need to make sure I address the abuse I put my skin through in the summer, and I need to do it sooner over later.

We are all in this together and I should share! I met this super cool, beautiful woman with skin that was exactly what I wanted, at first I thought she was just a make up master but it turns out she is a skin master! I love the idea that make up can be used as an accent and for fun rather than to cover up what you want to hide.  Kathryn also didn’t shy away from the Okanagan lifestyle, no need to hide from the sun… but you have to treat the damage rather than band aid it.. so I am going for it!

Off to Bijou I go! I had a facial and a Venus Freeze treatment and am on a regiment of ZO Skin Care.. will it work? It will be pretty obvious either way!

Not the best photo but it will get things started; here is my face after week 1!

It’s not easy

July 13, 2015

It’s not easy. its-not-gonna-be-easy-107791-480-436_large

Fat loss.

Muscle gain.

Good attitute.

Consistence.

Food prep.

Solid choices.

It’s not easy.

Anyone that tells you it is easy is either in a minority of people who are blessed in a few different departments, or they are trying to sell you something that is probably a good idea to stay away from.

Here is what I have learned on my journey so far.

#1. Don’t beat your self up when you go off track. Just get back on track ASAP and move forward.

#2. Celebrate the little victories. Just don’t celebrate them with ice cream.

#3. Love yourself every step of the way, Just because your “end goal” might be vastly different than where you are today, it doesn’t mean that you aren’t pretty fabulous today. Enjoy the journey.

#4. Understand the “why.” Why do you want this? Dig deep and understand the motivation, it will make the harder days easier and the days off the wagon shorter.

#5. The only person you can compare your journey to is you. This is the really hard part for me. Why does she lose fat faster? Why does she move faster? Why can’t I lift as much even if I work as hard? There is zero point to this line of thought.

#6. Find an expert. I turned to the team at Aspire Health and Performance. Coach Andrew has the background I need and the aptitude to discover what else I might need. It’s not everyday that a midlife power athlete walks into your gym looking to address very specific goals with a background like mine. It takes a mix of personality and know how that isn’t always easy to find.

#7. LISTEN to your expert. LISTEN MORE when it feels like everything is falling apart and nothing is happening. Step back and LISTEN again when you want to throw in the towel because it feels like the universe is conspiring against you.

20150625_153134#8. Be honest with both yourself and the people working with you. It’s not always easy but that is where the biggest growth will come.

#9. You can do more than you think if you stop telling yourself you can’t.

#10. Sometimes you need to ask the same question over and over and over again. A good coach gets this and will keep answering until you understand the answer so you don’t need to ask again.

So far in my journey the thing I love the most is how I am moving. In everything from wake surfing to walking down stairs my body is responding better. Somedays are harder than others to get my butt in gear but those little victories are starting to add up pretty quickly and motivate me to fight through the tougher days.

I don’t know how to stress this enough. If you are thinking about making a change. DO IT TODAY. Find the expert, pay the money, work and push harder than you every have before. Sweat. Cry. Be frustrated. Fight. Kick something. Pout. Growl. Just give everything you have to it. When you are in the gym, give that time the respect you deserve in this journey. That is the time for you to focus on one thing; your body and how it is moving. Start with full commitment within that time frame and before you know it other pieces of your life will start to fall in line as well.

Kudus and thanks to you for even ready this far. 🙂 Feel free to leave a comment or fire me off a message if you want to chat or need a little push.. we are all in this together and I promise I have your back 🙂

Sprott Shaw Graduation 2015 address

https://youtu.be/OeK–EjV7mQ

Thank you…

I was honoured and flattered when I received the invitation to be with you tonight.

A group of people who have chosen professions that will touch and change lives. Nursing, Health Care assistants, community support workers social services, Admin assistants, business management, medical office assistants, legal administrators –  all of you will be making someone’s life easier,  smoother and in some cases safer. For some of you it will be in situations where they won’t be able to say thank you. So let me take a moment now and say Thank you. Thank you, for taking the time to get educated in a role that will make a difference in our community.

Tonight you sit at the end of the beginning.

So much growth, time, dedication and education passed to get you to this night.  Such an exciting time as you step into your next role, begin a new chapter and embrace your future. What wisdom can I offer?  I may have a nugget or two to pass along.

The grown up in me wants to remind you to never spend more than you make and no matter what buy contents insurance.

But more importantly I want you to:

Howl at the moon.  While it is fun to throw back your head and let a howl loose that’s not exactly what I mean.  I want you to embrace your passions and share that enthusiasm with the people around you. The fearless abandoned that still has great intent that is exemplified in a wolf howl at the full moon. Hold that spirit inside you and let it rip daily as you step forward into your next adventure.

Grow YOU. Already you have come so far after making the decision to pursue a career and get the required education here at Sprott Shaw. Know that the YOU of today is not the YOU of tomorrow and that is okay. You are special, you are on fire and you have learned so much, but the road ahead of you will continue to mould you along the way. Your foundation is strong which means it’s time to stretch. Listen to your mentors, listen to your peers, listen to the person that drives you crazy – and grow.

The most exciting thing about the end of the beginning is that it is the beginning of the middle.

Choose today how you are going to walk through your professional life. Will you be posting on facebook about what a pain in the butt Monday’s are and how you can’t wait till Friday?  Or will Monday’s be a day, while perhaps not easy to roll out of bed, will still be met with joy for the work week ahead because this is what you trained for  and what you choose.

If the time comes that your feet stop hitting the floor with enthusiasm for the day or week ahead remember you can choose to grow YOU. Make a change and embrace a new adventure ahead, your success here at Sprott Shaw has already taught you that your capacity to learn is more than enough.

Crappy things are going to happen; divorce, job loss, health issues, it will be hard and frustrating. Those moments can define you. Again choose to grow you. Reframe your world and find a way. Somewhere in the dark I promise there will be a light. If you can’t find that light, find someone with a lighter.. or at least a flashlight to help you find the way.

One of the great things about education, no matter what course you are in, is that it opens you to the concept that someone with great skill or knowledge is available to pass that information on to you. Please know the same goes for day to day life and no matter how proficient you become there is always someone that can teach you something that will make life easier for you.

Asking for help, more tools in the toolbox, and support is never a bad idea.

So remember:

Don’t spend more then you make

Always have insurance

Howl at the Moon

Grow you

Choose your outlook

And find a flashlight

One last thing to carry with you..  as Walk The Moon likes to remind us.. sometimes; you just need to Shut up and dance.

Congratulations.

Training on a holiday.

May 19, 2015

So many people said; “Come on! It’s a stat, take a day off!”

Why did I get up early and make sure I trained before getting in my day of fun on the lake? A few reasons…

A couple weeks ago I pounded out 2.5 hours a day on a stationary bike, 5 days in a row.

1526577_818737421542955_8934893480391837534_n

It was really hard.

644454_804782329605131_8781861331622037780_n

But I did it.

Following that my “off day” training was also increased and really pushed the limits of what I thought I could do. My coach Andrew LoCurto at Aspire Health and Performance has been true to his word and gives what he gets. I push myself hard and he in turn pushes me harder and at the same time provides a safety net to make sure I remain uninjured and motivated. Why would I dishonour that hard work by taking a day off that I didn’t need? Trust me, rest days are important, but rest days do not always coincide with the Queen’s birthday!

10989471_824749420941755_6298292314587096603_o

These pictures may not be the most flattering of me, but they are the real. People need to know that the time you put in is hard, sweaty, and tough, but so worth it. If you walk away from your time training with your make up intact and no need for a shower, it might be time to reevaluate.

Plus I respect Andrew and what he is doing for me far too much to take a day off when he is ready, willing and able to train me.

If you are looking for some training, check out the “training camps” that Aspire is offering! They have a bunch of different ones, the price is right and it might open the door to a whole new outlook on what your body can do, and the benefits that come from taking time everyday that is solely dedicated to being the best you can.

I can’t wait to see you at Aspire!

For a thigh clapping good time

April 22, 2015

I promised a frank account of my experiences getting back into the shape I want to be in.

Some of it isn’t pretty but it is pretty funny.

thigh clap

That little cartoon always made me giggle, but I never thought it actually happens. I know we have all felt like it was about to happen… but to actually happen?? Nooooo…

Training leads to all sorts of fun body sounds. Pops, snaps, cracks and the classic Pfffffffft…

Try not to let it freak you out, anyone who has spend anytime moving their body, never mid pushing it to extremes, has experienced an unexpected soundtrack. Gym etiquette says you either ignore what has happened and those around you will do the same, or acknowledge it with a laugh.. and move on.

Trust me, as a powerlifter, max lift day can create a virtual symphony.

Back to the thigh clap.

I am innocently enough pushing through box jumps when I hear a strange sound. I ignore it and move on. I am working hard, really hard, I hear it again! Perhaps Andrew is just cheering me on. He can be very encouraging, but that didn’t seem right. The sounds continues. With every jump I hear the usual thud of my feet, scream of my lungs, and gasp of wonderment that I am still upright and not lying injured on the floor. Yet.. something is different.

OMG. The momentum and effort was causing my THIGHS TO CLAP TOGETHER.

In my earlier years this delightful experience would of led to tears, shame and horror.

Happily I am older and wiser.

First I clarified with trainer Andrew that I was indeed hearing this sound.

I was.

Following that I clarify that he isn’t traumatized.

He wasn’t.

Cue the laughter ~ and more box jumps.

Ready to start the journey for a healthier you?

BTW: Never google thigh clap.. just don’t do it.

What goes up, goes down and goes up again…

March 05, 2015

As someone who has focused on powerlifting training for the last 5 years or so, the thought of doing reps of more than 5 makes me want to vomit.

Low weight high reps? Give me a break!

Well… when you start with a new trainer, especially when you have done your research and know the fit is right, you have to shut off the older voices in your head and embrace the new plan.

YOU CAN INSERT MANY MANY MANY MANY BAD WORDS HERE

The last few Friday’s  I have completed 4 sets of 15 front squats and 15 Romanian deadlifts. I have no idea how I am still here to tell the tale. Following that last Friday I also did another circuit that words can not do justice.

My goals are slightly different at this point (even though I have signed up for a Powerlifting meet the end of July) so the training is different. Sometimes I don’t skip into the gym with great glee, sometimes I am exhausted, frustrated and have other things on my mind but I always leave the gym feeling inspired, determined and satisfied that another step has been taken in the right direction of where I want to go.

As promised… here is further proof that it isn’t always pretty but I am getting it done.

Wanna come play with me? I love all the friendly faces I am seeing 🙂 Join me at Aspire Health and Performance. Stop Working Out. Start Training.
