Rocks in that jelly!

November 15, 2016

belly-laugh

Fat loss is such a pain in the ass. I have tackled this issue head on and hired some help for the process. At this point in involves weekly measurments with calipers – oh joy. I tend to make small jokes while this delightful process is on the go. Today while the calipers were clasped on my ample belly I made a seasonal joke that it shook like a bowl full of jelly. The quick retort fro the woman wielding the hot dog tongs with teeth was; “only if the bowl of jelly has rocks in it, there is some serious muscle in there!”

So while my ego is generally not pleased with the whole fatty mess.. it did get a happy little pat.

Onwards!

World record? Sure I will take that!

That is what total effort look like! Happy to say I did get that lift!

May 14th was a big day. I stepped back onto the platform to compete in powerlifting. It has been years since I walked away from competing. This go round was a totally different experience, and it was fabulous.

I was confident, happy and reasonably relaxed. Andrew (Aspire Health and Performance) had done a great job of preparing me for the day and helping me keep my expectations in check as to what our goal was. The goal was to get back on the platform and remember what it was like to have my head in the game, obviously it was also to be competitive but in Vernon that was only part of the process.

I have some frustrations with the sport and I needed to make sure my head was in a good place to deal with them (a post of another day) but needless to say I was worried that those old frustrations would show up and throw me completely off.

They didn’t.

Having Andrew there to coach me through the day (I am horrible at warm ups) and a crew of people ready to cheer me on (thank you Roberta, Valeh, Kim, Lance, and Sheila) made a big difference, along with what I had done to get there.

I went 7 for 9. I missed my 3rd Squat and my 3rd Deadlift. The great thing is I walked away from both lifts knowing they are just about ready and next go round will be mine.

SHW

Squat 152.5kg / 335.5lbs  – National Record for weight class and both age group and open class

Bench – 72.5kg / 159.5lbs – National record age/weight class (which is ridiculous but I will take it)

Deadlift – 157.5 / 346.5lbs – National record age/weight

Total – 382.5 / 841.5 – National record age/weight

Unconfirmed World Record in the back squat, deadlift and total for my age group and weight class.

So if you are keeping track that is: 5 National Records and 3 World Records.

So I won gold in my age group/weight class at the Vernon classic, but I was the only one in it.  The good news is that on the world stage my numbers hold. Oddly enough in powerlifting they give individual awards for bench and dead but not squat.. if they had I would of had the squat gold as well.

The big winner is always the overall winner, that is the person who lifts the most vs their body weight. They use a formula called wilks. In my weight class it is rarely won because there is usually a beast in a lighter weight class that tips the scales dramatically! I have only won it once, and I came close this time as well, sitting in 2nd or 3rd. If I had gotten my 3rd Squat or Dead it would of been mine.

I am at a good place to start both physically and mentally. Overall I am happy with these numbers, not thrilled, but happy. Next up is The Grind in August and following that Worlds in Pennsylvania!

*To be completely transparent my bench has been MUCH better in the past and should be closer to 200lbs to be competitive on the world stage.  The federation I lift in is called 100% RAW and while competitive, the most competivtite federation (and oldest) is IPF or CPU. My weights are close to records in IPF and I’m looking forward to blowing those up as well down the road.

3 Easy Things To Do That Will Make Life Better

February 16, 2016

These three things are not necessarily for everyone but they impacted my life in enough of a way that it should be shared.

Here we go! Three easy things to do that will make life better.

Number 1

We shall start with an Affirming Password!

password1-618x336

How many passwords do you type in the day? Make them work for you!!

Try: Iamhappy, NoSmoking, DrinkMoreWater, or Itisanawesomeday!

Use what ever will help you have the best day you can. The little things can make a difference.

Number 2

Don’t take this the wrong way, but my weekly blow has changed my life!

Seriously. Once a week I visit Ashley at Cream Salon on Ellis and she “blows out” my hair. My hair has never been better! Our Grandma’s were on to something when they went to the salon once a week for a “set and style.”  It has gotten to the point that my hair only needs to be washed once a week. It’s fabulous. TRY IT. Grandma was RIGHT!

It took about 6 weeks to get to this stage but it was worth it, I now have a stylists that knows my hair super well because she works with it every week, and I don’t have to buy shampoo and conditioner anymore because Ashley is the only one that washes my hair and uses the best product around!

Number 3

Sweat. REALLY sweat.

Andrew at Aspire Health and Performance once said to me that at the end of every training session I should not be able to leave the gym comfortable without taking a shower. I hold that in the back of my mind when I am training with Andrew or on my own. Basically 5 days a week I sweat for over an hour.

I sweat out anger.

I sweat out frustration.

I sweat determination.

I sweat to hide tears.

I sweat because I am alive and moving my body as well as I can to make sure I live the life I want to.

A few more reasons SWEAT is good for you.

There you go!

Three relatively simple things that have truly impacted in my life in a positive way, perhaps they can do the same for you!

SNOW!! Here’s how to beat the snow shoveling blues!

January 05, 2016

So, we have snow.. and more snow.. and look.. MORE %^$# SNOW! If you don’t have the luxury of underground heated parking (I love condo life) chances are good you have some shovelling to get done. Perhaps you have done the shoveling and now can’t move. Hopefully these 3 little moves will help. #Condoliferocks

Big thanks to Andrew at Aspire Health and Performance! If you are looking for a coach, he does know a few more moves as well 😉

October 28, 2015

I’m back at Aspire!!

Remember how your Mom always said to male sure you didn’t “over due it” when you were recovering from being sick, otherwise it would take twice as long to get better?

Mom was right. That sound you just heard was my Mother where ever she is high 5’ing all her friends.

I was sick September 21st and honestly haven’t been 100% until this past week!!  Mostly because I kept trying to push things and get back into Aspire and work .. and life at the pace I am accustomed to.

Seriously bad call; and I kept getting knocked back into bed.

I am out the other side now! 5 pounds heavier but happy to be moving forward.

I pounded out a solid hour on the bike the other day. It was following a very busy day at work with a quick video shoot.. which I got all dolled up for (hello mascara and lip gloss) which I forgot I had on.

The sweat was pouring off me as I gave all I had on that bike. Yup. I became THAT girl.

thatgirl

I was wondering why everyone kept looking at me strangely. I burst into crazed laughter when I walked into the change room and happened to look into the mirror.  Le sigh. So here is the lesson.. that girl with the make up running down her face.. might be totally unaware of what is happening and is just trying to get her sweat on. Be kind. 😉

Psssst… get a jump on your New Year Resolution… Find out how to get started — HERE

Ugly Truth

October 15, 2015

That’s an ugly truth.

Sometimes you have to “talk the talk” before you “walk the walk” but sometimes no matter how much talking you do a big obstacle can appear. You might think you have it licked, like your favourite ice cream from Moo Licks, but sometimes that truth rises up and smacks you in the face, also sometimes like your favourite ice cream at Moo Licks. (I be messy)

I’m lucky I have the steady influence of husband Steve, friends and an awesome family at Aspire Health and Performance so when things get messy I do have something to hold onto whilst I work it out.

Here’s the deal. No matter how much positive body talk I have going on, no matter how much I support others, no matter how fabulous I am feeling about my progress, somewhere inside I believe that as long as I am heavier than what society wants me to be I will never be recognized as a successful athlete.

Cue the tears. I need to get past this.

Here’s the plan.

Purge purge purge.

  • I am tossing/donating all the clothes I have that are too big or too small and just working within the world that I currently occupy. That whole living in the moment thing.
  • I am organizing (or finding someone else to) our home so I can work efficiently within it. Freeing up that steady stress in my brain that feels like I am just staying afloat.
  • I am staring my feelings of inadequacy straight in the eye and acknowledging them; and promptly delivering a raspberry.
  • I will listen to my coach and my friends, do what I need to, and kick some serious butt when I return to the platform.
  • I will continuing to focus on growth in every aspect including getting better at my job everyday and doing the things that make me feel outstanding and confident both inside and out!
  • Whatever my weight is in January will dictate the class I will be lifting in come May and I will do the best I can in that class and celebrate every victory I have, without second guessing that success because of the number on the scale. What matters is the number on the bar and it’s just going to have to be heavier in order to obtain the success I want.

I have had so much success.  Time to keep building on that and see where this road leads. I am thankful to have solid support on this journey, it makes it easier to know I can trust the people around me.

Here’s to a brilliant 2016 back on the platform!
